| Poland Qualifies for Euro!!! | |

Poland qualified for the European Championship for the first time ever when they defeated Belgium 2-0 in Warsaw on November 17. Ebi Smolarek scored both goals taking his total in the qualification campaign to 9. Four days later Poland traveled to Serbia and with qualification already ensured coach Leo Beenhakker rested several regulars, but the team did not disappoint and managed a 2-2 draw.
The campaign had an ominous start last September when in the first match Poland lost 1-3 to Finland in Bydgoszcz followed by a 1-1 draw with Serbia in Warsaw. Next came an unconvincing 1-0 win over Kazakhstan in Alamaty. However, the turning point came on October 11, 2006 in Chorzow when the national team defeated Portugal by a score of 2-1 with Smolarek scoring both goals. Poland followed that with four straight wins to put themselves in the driving seat. There was a hiccup when they traveled to Armenia and lost 0-1 making the trip to Lisbon in early September that much more important. A 2-2 draw was more than anyone expected, but that was followed by a disappointing 0-0 draw away to Finland. Smolarek got the campaign back on track when he scored a hat-trick in the 3-1 win over Kazakhstan in Warsaw. Poland got some help from others in this group, most notably Portugal finished with six draws, allowing Poland to take top spot. The draw takes place on December 2. Check out the seedings here. |

In a match that was dominated by Portugal for long stretches Poland managed to pull out a 2-2 draw. Mariusz Lewandowski put Poland ahead just before the half. After the break Portugal pressed even more and got two goals, but with only two minutes left Jacek Krzynówek unleashed a powerful shot that hit the post rebouned of the Portuguese keeper into the net. |

Although Zagłębie Lubin put in a much better performance in the second leg meeting with Steaua Bucuresti it was still not enough to see them through to the next round of Champions League qualifying. Michał Stasiak put the Polish club ahead in the 29th minute, tying the aggregate score at 1-1. That only lasted 8 minutes when the Romanians equalised through Banel Nicolita. All was not lost, however, because one more goal would not only give Lubin the win in the second leg but would have sent them through to the second round on away goals. It was not to be. After failing to convert several chances Lubin gave up a goal when Steaua's Dorel Zaharia sealed the win for his club in the 82nd minute. |

GKS Bełchatów tied Georgian club FC Ameri Tbilisi 2-2 on aggregate but won 4-2 on penalties. Next they will face Ukrainian side FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk in what
looks like a though draw.
Groclin Dyskobolia Grodzisk Wielkopolski won 1-0 on aggregate against MKT Araz from Azerbaijan. Although thier next opponent, Kazakhstan club FC Tobol Kostanay, appears easy on paper they qualified for the UEFA Cup through the Intertoto Cup by winning against clubs from Georgia, the Czech Republic, and Greece. |

Polish Champions Zagłębie Lubin lost thier 2nd qualifying round first leg match 0-1 to Romanian club Steaua Bucuresti. The 1985/86 European Cup winners showed that they were a class above their Polish rivals earning the win in Lubin without ever displaying their full potential. Losing a goal at home makes the prospect of advancing past this stage of the competion a very difficult task for Zagłębie. The return leg takes place on 8 August in Bucharest. |

The bid from Poland and Ukraine has beat out rival bids from Italy and Croatia-Hungary for the right to host Euro 2012. Polish cities slated to host matches are: Warszawa, Gdańsk, Poznań, and Wrocław. Chorzów and Kraków are alternate locations. |
