A hat-trick from VfL Bochum striker Peter Madsen powered Denmark to a 5-1 away win against Poland on Wednesday.

With World Cup qualifiers against Northern Ireland and England next month, Poland showed little of the form that took them to the 2002 World Cup finals.

Madsen punished some woeful defending from the hosts with two goals in six minutes midway through the first half.

The Bundesliga striker's first came from an unmarked header inside the box, while the second was a scrambled drive from close range after a handling error from Liverpool goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek.

Madsen added a well-worked third in stoppage time as the Danes exploited the space created by a more expansive Polish performance in the second half.

West Bromwich Albion defender Thomas Gaardsoe and Fulham's Claus Jensen scored the other Danish goals while Wisla Krakow striker Maciej Zurawski replied for the Poles after 76 minutes.

Poland play their first World Cup Group Six qualifier away to Northern Ireland on September 4, followed by a home game against England in Katowice on September 8.

Denmark begin their Group Two campaign at home against Ukraine on September 4, followed by a trip to Albania five days later. Euro 2004 champions Greece are also paired with Denmark.
