Ten-man Poland kept the pressure on England at the top of World Cup European Group Six with a resounding 3-1 win over Austria here on Saturday.
The Poles are now just a point behind leaders England after Sven-Goran Eriksson's men had earlier defeated Wales 2-0 in Manchester. Radoslav Kaluzny, Jacek Krzynowek and Tomasz Frankowski were on target for the Poles with Markus Schopp scoring for the home side who remain in third place in the table. Poland were in front after just nine minutes when Austria's former Arsenal goalkeeper Alex Manninger failed to hold on to a fierce drive and his half-save allowed Kaluzny to score easily from close range. Jerzy Dudek had to be alert to deny a header from Mario Haas but he was unable to prevent Austria from clinching an equaliser when Schopp, left in plenty of space down the right, cut inside to score with his left foot in the 30th minute. It was Schopp's fourth international goal. Haas came close to adding a second for Austria just moments later when his pace left his marker behind but his left foot drive only found the side-netting. Austria were on top early in the second half and on 65 minutes they should have been 2-1 ahead. Kamil Kosowski allowed Haas to escape behind him but the Austrian striker's first touch let him down as he went in on goal and Dudek was allowed to gather. Poland were under the cosh but they hit back to lead in the 77th minute and again Manninger was at fault. Jacek Krzynowek, who was booked three minutes earlier, hit a fierce free-kick with his left foot from the edge of the box. The ball took a slight deflection off the Austrian wall and slipped agonisingly beneath the body of Manninger. Poland were then reduced to 10-men when Arek Radomski was red-carded just 10 minutes after coming on but they still managed to stun the home fans when Tomasz Frankowski sealed the three points in injury time.
