Travelling on the road to St. Mary’s over the course of the weekend, despite an early penalty scare, Man United ran out comfortable 0-3 winners against the newly-promoted side, with one of the more impressive wins since ten Hag’s arrival from Ajax.

“Of course [Erik ten Hag should not be sacked],” Louis van Gaal told Sky Sports. “But I needed also more time at Manchester United. I also won the FA Cup and before me for 20 years [no other manager] has got the FA Cup [at Man United].”

“Now, Erik is winning the FA Cup and also first year qualifying for the Champions League so I don’t think you have to sack him,” van Gaal explained. “He needs more time but I can also be more critical. He has not done it fantastically – you can give criticizm – but he has also shown he is a good manager.”

But we are definitely in there. Also, we would have been this season – if the players would have been available. But that is the biggest thing that has to change, that players over the course of the season are available.” 

As things stand, however, ahead of tomorrow’s FA Cup final, ten Hag’s leading potential successor has been identified as Ipswich Town head coach, Kieran McKenna – who guided ‘The Tractor Boys’ to back-to-back promotions in the form of Premier League football next season. 

The Fermanagh native was a part of the coaching setup during both tenures under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solsksjaer at Man United, and has heavily impressed since taking the reigns at Ipswitch – drawing interest from current manager-less sides, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Chelsea.

McKenna, a former first team coach at Man United under both the reigns of Jose Mourinho, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, departed United upon the appointment of current head coach, ten Hag – and has since led Ipswitch Town to stunning back-to-back promotions.
