Following weeks of speculation linking recent record-setting Tottenham Hotspur forward, Harry Kane with a move from the London side, odds have continued to tumble on the English national team captain making a summer move to Manchester United.

Kane, who netted a record-setting 267th goal for Spurs in a February clash with Premier League holders, Manchester City, surpassed Jimmy Greaves in the club’s record books.

Furthermore, the 29-year-old is just five goals away from joining fellow England international and former Manchester United talisman, Wayne Rooney on 208 Premier League goals – leaving just him and former Southampton, Blackburn Rovers, and Newcastle United frontman, Alan Shearer between the record for most goals in Premier League antiquity. 

Domestically, United, under the guidance of Erik ten Hag, sit a single point ahead of manger-less Spurs, who parted ways with Italian veteran, Antonio Conte this week, however, the Old Trafford side have two games in hand on their London top-4 chasing rivals.

Tipped to target an out-and-out number nine to lead the line this summer, United lost both Edison Cavani at the end of last season and Portuguese icon, Cristiano Ronaldo before the turn of the year. And couple that with the uncertain future of the disgraced youth academy product, Mason Greenwood, the Manchester side have been tipped to splash the cash on a forward following the culmination of their campaign in May.

Touted to hunt down the signature of Kane, alongside Bundesliga holders, Bayern Munich – who recently parted ways with Julan Nagelsmann in preference to UEFA Champions League winner, Thomas Tuchel, United have seen odds on them signing the England captain slashed as low as 5/2 on many markets. The game was settled after 63 minutes. Kane turned provider for Mason Mount who masterfully chipped of the Albania ‘keeper.

England have now won both of their World Cup qualifiers and sit top of Group I. On Wednesday they should face a much sterner test when Poland travel to Wembley.

Post-match, Southgate was pleased with what he saw.

“What pleased me was that we adapted well to a pitch that was difficult to move the ball on,” Southgate said. “We controlled the game and, after about 25 minutes, changed the shape of the midfield a little bit and we looked a lot more dangerous. They had a different formation to the one they played in the last 25 matches, so we adapted to that and were comfortable for most of the second half.

The England boss felt his team could’ve managed the game better in the last 15 minutes.

“We have opportunities at the end of the game and should have killed the game off and I didn’t like the way we managed that game in the last 15 minutes,” Southgate said. “We charged forward when we didn’t need to, we nearly conceded from throw in at the end.
