Poland was drawn into Group 6 (there are 8 groups in UEFA),
with England, Austria, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Azerbaijan. Most will
pick England to win this group with Poland, Austria, and Wales fighting for
second place.
The winner of the group qualifies directly for the World Cup. The two best second place teams from all the groups also qualify directly. The other 6 second place teams are drawn against each other and play a home and away play-off to determine the other 3 qualifiers. Play starts in September 2004 and runs to October 2005. The play-offs will take place in November 2005. |
